SUMMARY:Marcus Young - Using Ai to diagnose delirium in critically ill patients
DESCRIPTION:This is very innovative and internationally significant work. \nMarcus Young is an engineer and researcher focused on the intersection of technology\, data\, and critical care. His current research explores how artificial intelligence and natural language processing (NLP) can be used to make sense of unstructured clinical records in intensive care units. In particular\, Marcus studies how patterns in doctors’ and nurses’ notes can provide clues about complex conditions like delirium — a serious and often under-recognised complication in critically ill patients. He also uses a method called “target trial emulation” to help answer important clinical questions using real-world hospital data\, in situations where formal trials may not be feasible. \nMarcus has a background in electrical engineering and leads a small team at Incarta\, a Melbourne-based medical technology company. His work includes deploying wearable monitoring tools for use in remote and rural settings\, developing software that helps clinicians make better sense of complex patient data\, and designing a new portfolio of environmentally sustainable obstetrics consumables. Across all projects\, the goal is the same: to create technology that is practical\, thoughtful\, and improves patient care. \nAt heart\, Marcus is passionate about bridging the gap between health and technology — and about making sure the tools we build serve people\, not just systems.
